Spirituality of Solidarity

We begin our Lent Series, using the Bloomsbury publishing 2026 Lent Book: Easter in Disguise, by Liz Dodd.
As we think about Lent, we consider how to live more like Jesus, especially in regard to His pursuit of radical justice. Over Lent we will be looking at different ‘spiritualities’ or ways to encounter God.
This week we consider the spirituality of solidarity. Jesus came to earth to live a human life, the ultimate act of solidarity. He lived and served among the poor, the marginalised, the overlooked. How can we follow Jesus’ example and stand in solidarity with others?
Matthew 4:1-11 Deuteronomy 8:2-3 Hebrews 4:15-16
Quotes This is the situation that Jesus went into the desert to heal. Jesus redeemed us from the consequences of our emotional programs for happiness by experiencing them himself […] He appears in the desert as the representative of the human race. He bears within himself the experience of the human predicament in its raw intensity. Thomas Keating
From Easter in Disguise, by Liz Dodd “are invitations, pathways into transformation… because they challenge us to surrender as well as to act”
“The incarnation is the ultimate act of solidarity because God became human and lived a human life in absolute solidarity with us.”
Were Jesus to stumble in His humanity in the desert, to treat God like a cosmic slot machine, to exert Himself in power, to satisfy His own emotional programmes for happiness and security, He would not have stayed on the Cross either. Jesus chooses humanity – hunger, interdependence, service – ahead of any agenda for power. He dies because of this, and He asks us to take the same road.
