Sarah's Story

Women of the Nativity / 2

The story of Christmas, of God coming down to dwell with His creation is bigger than just the events of the Nativity as found recorded in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. The story of Christmas echoes throughout the whole of human history.

Matthew’s gospel recognises that the story of Christ begins long ago, as he starts his gospel with the genealogy of Jesus, starting with Abraham who fathered Isaac. Which is why we are spending time looking at the story of Abraham and Sarah this week.

The story of Abraham and Sarah is one full of hope, expectation, longing, promise and fulfilment. Abraham and Sarah had to wait decades for the fulfilment of God’s promise of a son. They struggled with waiting and tried to bring the promise about in their own way. Sarah laughed scornfully, sceptically at the promise. But eventually they saw that God was faithful to His promises and Sarah gave birth to Isaac, in her old age.

What promises from God are you struggling to believe in? How can the story of Abraham and Sarah encourage you that God is faithful to His promises?

Genesis 18:1-15; 21:1-7
