"I desire mercy, not sacrifice"
Matthew's Gospel / 8
We continue to follow Jesus in Matthew’s gospel where we see Jesus engaged in confrontations with the Pharisees about the Sabbath. The Pharisees were so focused on trying to be the best at doing nothing, at following every letter of the law (most of them they made themselves) that they completely lost sight of the point of the Sabbath. They did not recognise that the Sabbath was about resting our bodies and connecting with God to allow Him to make us more like Him.
Are you getting the rest that God instructs us to have? Are you following the rhythm of life that God gives us? And are you allowing God’s character to change you so that you live in the light of His grace and mercy? The Sabbath is not more important than showing compassion and love to others. Jesus healed the man with the shrivelled hand on the Sabbath even though the Pharisees traditions forbade it. What traditions, rituals, or other human things stop us from showing compassion and love to others?
